Apple Rolls Out Tap to Pay on iPhone in Eight European Countries

Apple has announced the launch of Tap to Pay on iPhone in eight European countries: Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Greece, Iceland, Luxembourg, and Malta.

With this expansion, Apple aims to empower merchants across these regions to securely accept in-person contactless payments using only an iPhone. In collaboration with payment platforms, app developers, and payment networks, Tap to Pay on iPhone allows businesses of all sizes to accept payments from contactless credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, and other digital wallets—all via a supported iOS app and without the need for additional hardware or payment terminals.

Seamless Contactless Payments via iPhone

Tap to Pay on iPhone enables merchants to accept contactless transactions using a supporting iOS app on an iPhone XS or later running the latest version of iOS. At checkout, the merchant prompts the customer to hold their contactless card, iPhone, Apple Watch, or other device with a digital wallet near the merchant’s iPhone. The transaction is completed securely using NFC (Near Field Communication) technology.

Apple’s Partners in Europe

Apple has partnered with a broad ecosystem of payment platforms and app developers across the payments and commerce industries to support the rollout of Tap to Pay. These partners can integrate the functionality into their iOS apps, making it easy for merchants to enable this feature.

As of this announcement, Tap to Pay on iPhone is available in the following eight countries, supported by the respective payment platforms:

- Belgium: Adyen, Axepta, Mollie, myPOS, Pay.nl, Revolut, Stripe, SumUp, Viva, and Worldline
